In the last couple weeks the on-time performance of this once proud Surfliner has gone spiraling downward like - a slow motion train wreck. The status page below contained only a hint of reality. Arrival time in Solana Beach yesterday was more than one hour behind schedule. Passenger morale is down to the point where people are fleeing to their cars, to other trains, even the Metrolink.
Join us as we launch an investigative series into the operational issues with Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #784.
It's not just the 784. The 591 last Saturday (7/23/11) was nearly an hour late. Excuse: equipment failure. Tonight (7/31/11) the 587 was twenty minutes late and, after conversations, a double packed train. In other words, two train loads of people stuffed into one train. Amtrak is stuffing as many people into their trains with as little rolling stock as they can get away with. The only way Amtrak will stop this is for the public to 1) call the Department of Transportation, 2) call their representative in Congress and 3) document with photographic evidence the over crowded, and dangerous, conditions.
